CMI level 3 Certificate in Principles of Management & Leadership

Course Overview

The CMI Certificate in Principles of Management & Leadership qualification is designed for practising or aspiring managers who supervise or manage a team to achieve clearly defined outcomes by providing instruction, direction and guidance.

The programme offers an overview of the essential skills required by people managers and provides a basis for starting or continuing to build a career in people management.

The course is offered as a blend of online and face-to-face delivery. All course content is linked to the world of work and ensures that you are given practical and theoretical knowledge to make the most of your qualification.

Course Content

Successful completion of the qualification requires you to attend workshops and carry out assessment across 3 CMI units as below:

Supporting People throughout the Employee Lifecycle

Develop your understanding of the employee life cycle and the important role managers play in supporting people throughout the employment journey. This unit covers the responsibilities of managers at each stage of the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding and career development.

Dates: In Person 17 February 2027 (9:30am - 3pm)

Online Assignment Support 22 February 2027 (9:30am - 3pm) (over Teams), plus 4 hours self-study

Principles of Communication in the Workplace

This unit is designed to equip managers with the knowledge and skills to select and use a range of workplace communication methods. It addresses the communication methods available to mangers, the barriers that disrupt effective communication, and the skills required to adapt communication style for different audiences and organisational contexts.

Dates: In Person 31 March 2027 (9:30am - 3pm),

Online Assignment Support 05 April 2027 (09:30am - 3pm) (over Teams), plus 4 hours self-study.

Contributing to the Management of Conflict

This unit aims to support managers in understanding the types and causes of conflict, developing strategies to respond to conflict situations and sharing good practices to enhance team dynamics and productivity. It addresses the challenges that can arise in the workplace, such as conflict and disagreement, and emphasizes the importance of responding to these situations in a timely and professional manner.

Dates: In Person 05 May 2027 (9:30am - 3pm)

Online Assignment Support 10 May 2027(9:30am - 3pm) (over Teams), plus 4 hours self-study

Benefits

The CMI Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Management & Leadership qualification will equip learners with a practical toolkit that enables them to deal effectively with direct reports, supporting and guiding them to contribute fully to team and organisational success. Upon completing the Certificate, learners will be awarded CMI Foundation Chartered Manager Status. This puts aspiring and early-career managers on a guided development pathway to becoming a fully-fledged CMI Chartered Manager.

Assessment

Module assessments are set by the study centre and contain a blend of written assignments, case studies and professional discussion. The assessments cover all the learning outcomes in the qualification.

Course Tutor

Sarah Le Quesne

Sarah has worked as a tutor with Compass since 2019, delivering Level 3 and Level 5 programmes. She is passionate about creating an engaging and supportive learning environment, helping learners build their confidence and apply their knowledge within the workplace. Sarah is also the Lead Tutor for the Launch a Local Career programme, where she supports and inspires young people and career changes as they explore their career options and prepare for the workplace. Through practical activities, group discussions and individual guidance, she helps participants recognise their strengths and develop valuable confidence, employability and leadership skills. Alongside her teaching roles, Sarah is a qualified and registered Animal Physiotherapist with more than 12 years of clinical experience. She holds a BSc in Equine Science and has completed a Level 7 qualification in Clinical Education. Sarah also has extensive experience in running her own business, supporting clients and mentoring other professionals. She draws on this practical experience to bring leadership and management theory to life through relatable, real-world examples.
